Have Golfer’s Handicaps Changed Over the Last 30 Years?

This is a really common question that gets tossed around in the media all the time. With all the massive improvements in the golf clubs and balls and the improvements in the conditioning of the golf courses, how could handicaps not be going lower? Well, the simple answer is, they have.

Over the past 15 years, golfer’s handicaps have dropped an average of 2 strokes. That’s not much, but that’s better than not improving at all and certainly better than going up, but why such little improvement?

When I started playing golf 25 years ago, I started with a set of Jack Nicklaus 1-3-5 woods made of persimmon, a set of Lee Trevino blades that used to give me metal splinters every time I pulled one from the bag and Jack Nicklaus’ “Golf My Way II” VHS tapes. Oh, and who could forget those damned balata balls that smiled back at you every time you caught one in the teeth.

Back then I hit my 7 iron about 150 yards, today 195. I hit my driver 240, today, over 300. We’re talking 30-40% improvements in distances and there’s no doubt my ball flight has far less curvature on it then back then, so my handicap should be equally improved, no?

Well, in my case it is! Before my career ending injury (broken neck), my handicap was down to a +4 at Castle Pines Golf Club – a difficult track where they used to play the INTERNATIONAL PGA Tour event. Today, even after the injury, I maintain a plus 2 handicap and only play during the summer months!

So, why is my story so different then the average golfer? RotarySwing Tour, that’s why. Let’s take a closer look at the average golfer’s handicap vs. that of the average member of RotarySwing.com

golfer's handicaps over 30 years

The simple answer is that I follow the exact same program that our 230,000+ members do! Practice what you preach, as they say. In fact, without the RST methodology and its emphasis on protecting the body from injury, I wouldn’t be able to play at all.

RotarySwing.com Members Average 3.5 Times as Many Dropped Strokes off their Handicaps

As you can see above, our members have dropped on average 7 strokes off their handicap, and that’s just the average! We get testimonials all the time of golfers who have shaved over 20 strokes off their handicaps! Yep, 20 strokes! How’d you like to go from shooting in the 90’s to in the 70’s? And do it in only a matter of months?

While your story might not be that dramatic, know that you can drop 3.5 times as many strokes as the poor old average golfer out there continually chasing the random golf tip like a lost investor asking for stock tips. Just like in the stock market, random tips don’t work. For that matter, does anything work in the stock market anymore? Another story for another day I guess…

The good news is that by now you know that random, conflicting tips from the golf publications and the stuff you hear on TV doesn’t work. You’ve been there, done that and you’re ready to get REAL with your golf swing. You’re ready to finally be honest with yourself and know that it will take work to improve your golf swing, but if you put in the time with RST you WILL get better – The Numbers Don’t Lie.
