If you don't shift your weight during the golf backswing — like so many golfers have been taught not to do — then it's nearly impossible to shift in the downswing without pushing very hard off the trail leg. That's because the natural movement of shifting to the trail side helps give you momentum to shift back to the lead side. This swing momentum is a critical part of the golf swing that allows you to use body movement as a source of speed rather than activating the muscles in your arms and hands.
