{"id":51,"date":"2012-10-26T18:46:41","date_gmt":"2012-10-26T18:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/?p=51"},"modified":"2019-03-04T09:04:24","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T14:04:24","slug":"increase-your-lag-just-like-learning-group-member-frank-coyle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/increase-your-lag-just-like-learning-group-member-frank-coyle\/","title":{"rendered":"Increase Your Lag Just Like Learning Group Member Frank Coyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, Frank joined my learning group, and I noticed immediately his problems of <a title=\"Key to Creating Lag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-instruction\/golfbiomechanics\/creating-golf-swing-lag.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">losing lag <\/a>and having a slight sway in his backswing.<\/p>\n<p>Frank was currently working on the <a title=\"9 to 3 Drill\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-instruction\/golfbiomechanics\/9-to-3-drill-golf-swing-drill.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">9 to 3 drill<\/a> but struggling with a few of the moves. We decided that continuing to work on the 9 to 3 drill would be a good place to start.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67\" style=\"width: 517px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-lag-frank.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67\" title=\"9 to 3 after lag frank\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-lag-frank.png?resize=517%2C517&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-lag-frank.png?w=517&amp;ssl=1 517w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-lag-frank.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-lag-frank.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Find out how Frank gained 30 degrees of lag by using the 9 to 3 drill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During his backswing he was letting his hips shift to the right.\u00a0 This caused his upper body to get too vertical, even slightly leaning toward the target as he finished his backswing.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, he was losing a slight bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-instruction\/golfbiomechanics\/importance-of-axis-tilt.php\">axis tilt<\/a> that he had at address.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, in the downswing he was very dominant with his right hand.\u00a0 Since he was pushing with his right hand, he was losing all of his lag as his hands passed in front of his right leg.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-before-frank-collage.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-60  \" title=\"9 to 3 before frank collage\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-before-frank-collage.png?resize=550%2C215&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"215\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Left:<\/strong> Pretty Nice address \u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>Center:<\/strong> Hips have shifted right causing the spine to lean left. <strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Right:<\/strong> Loss of lag due to an over active right hand.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If performed properly, the club should be just short of parallel with the ground at this point in the 9 to 3 drill.<\/p>\n<p>We started to work with 2 videos to help improve his technique. The first was the <a title=\"Right Hip Line\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-instruction\/golfbiomechanics\/golf-swing-weight-shift-right-hip-line.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maintaining The Right Hip Line Video<\/a>. In this video he worked on not letting the right hip line slide to the right during the backswing.<\/p>\n<p>His biggest breakthrough was when he had the feeling of the right hip line actually moving to the left as he made his backswing. THIS WAS ONLY A FEELING. In reality, the right hip remained still as he completed the swing.<\/p>\n<p>Second, we worked on maintaining lag in the downswing with the 9 to 3 drill. The big breakthrough here was to keep the hands soft and actually feel as though the hands were increasing lag as he started the downswing, instead of gradually unhinging.<\/p>\n<p>It all tied itself together after a couple weeks of practice when we decided to greatly exaggerate the moves. I told him:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFeel as though your hands get in front of your left thigh and the club is still parallel to the ground.\u00a0 This exaggeration will really help you. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t be afraid to exaggerate to the point of ridiculousness at first.\u00a0 This will help speed the process.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I would much rather see you come back with a video where the hips are shifting slightly to the left in the backswing and you&#8217;re keeping too much lag.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It will be much easier to tone down if you do this, rather than gradually getting a little bit better each day.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll exaggerate first, then we can tone it down once it becomes too exaggerated.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_61\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-frank.png?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-61  \" title=\"9 to 3 after frank\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-frank.png?resize=550%2C215&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-frank.png?resize=1024%2C402&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-frank.png?resize=300%2C118&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.rotaryswing.com\/golf-lessons-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/9-to-3-after-frank.png?w=1266&amp;ssl=1 1266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-61\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Left:<\/strong> Nice setup.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Center:<\/strong> No sway to the right with the hip and a better position with the spine angle. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Right:<\/strong> Over 30* increase in lag compared to before.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is when all of the moves came together.
