If you’re working on your golf swing<\/strong>, what is the number one thing you should focus on? Well, hopefully the answer is the fundamentals<\/strong>, right? Everything in life that you’ve learned, you learned the fundamentals first. I talked about driving a manual transmission \u2014 you learned how to press the gas and slip the clutch. Those are fundamentals taught the same way to help you learn how to drive. Now, with golf, name five fundamentals of the golf swing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ll wait here. I’ll give you a minute. Okay. You probably can’t because<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody seems to agree on what those fundamentals are. To me, golf swing fundamentals<\/strong> must meet a strict definition. By definition, a fundamental has to be primary, has to be the origin, has to be central, and has to be absolute. Those are the four criteria according to Webster’s for what a fundamental really is. The antonyms of that are: consequential, secondary, peripheral. And those are the things most golfers actually focus on. What do I mean? Let’s think about one thing people consider a golf swing fundamental<\/strong> \u2014 but isn’t by definition \u2014 and that’s swing plane<\/strong>. I talked about swing plane earlier. Swing plane by its very definition is NOT a fundamental of the golf swing. Now you may think I’ve lost my mind. “How could this idiot say that swing plane<\/strong> is not a fundamental when I watch golf on TV and that’s the first thing pundits do \u2014 draw lines with the telestrator and talk about swing plane this and swing plane that?” Well, by its very definition, what is swing plane? It happens in the periphery. It’s literally peripheral. So it can’t be central, right? Central would be the body<\/strong>. The club<\/strong> is swinging around the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the body, because the club can’t do anything by itself. So it’s certainly not<\/p>\n\n\n\n
