How To Stop Coming Over The Top In The Golf Swing – Pro Tip

Are you a golfer who’s still struggling, trying to figure out how to stop coming over the top in the golf swing? I get it, no matter what you try you can’t seem to fix it. Here’s the good part, it really is simple to stop coming over the top if you just understand one thing. That one thing? Understanding where speed really comes from in the golf swing. Most golfers swing over the top simply because they’re trying to produce power. That’s almost always what causes it.

You go to the top, especially when it comes to right handed golfers, they lift their right arm because it’s the dominant hand and then they try and push the club with the right shoulder and right hand side of the body. You can see it clearly in a mirror. If you go to the top, even if you’re in a great position when you get there, if you start rotating your shoulder toward the ball, you can see how it throws the club over the top in the golf swing.

When that happens, you’re always going to be swinging across the ball and hitting a cut. The bulk of your speed comes from releasing your wrists correctly in the golf swing. Once you understand that, you’ll start to be able to understand that getting the club to come over the top doesn’t produce any real power. It actually causes you to release the hands incorrectly.

What you want to feel is your arm drops into the position. I like to talk about how your elbow goes into your pocket. Your elbow is pointing at your pocket which gets you into what I like to call “The GOAT Delivery Position”. You see all the greats in this position just before they hit the ball.

The Goat Delivery Position

Most armatures have their elbow pointing away from their hip or away from their pocket. That’s because they started down with their shoulder. What you want to feel as you start down, is the lead side of your body shift back to your lead side and rotate. Don’t do anything with your arms at all at first. If you shift back to your lead side and rotate, your arms get into the position above naturally. The same position as all the greats.

Once you understand how to get your arms to work with that motion, you instantly stop swinging over the top. You’ll also start having real speed in your golf swing. When you rotate first, the club gets thrown out over your body. Once that happens, you lose leverage in your hands. When you use the lead side to help you shift, it lets the arm get into the GDP (goat delivery position ). It’s so much easier to produce power that way. But more than that, it quickly keeps you trying to figure out how to stop swinging over the top in the golf swing.
