The golf swing is really, really hard if you get started off on the wrong foot. So many people start completely destroying their golf swing in the first few inches that club moves back because they don’t understand how to make a simple proper takeaway.
The reality is the takeaway is the simplest moves in golf. All you have to do is understand how to move one thing correctly, and your takeaway will be simplified forever. What is that one thing?
Think about taking your right shoulder or shoulder blade and pulling it behind your head. Notice as I do this my head doesn’t move buy my chest turns about 45 degrees. Now if I do this with my hands out in front of me you can imagine as I extended them, my hands would go right into the perfect takeaway position, but I didn’t try to move my hands. That’s where you’re making the mistake, you’re trying to move the golf club, trying to move your hands instead of trying to move your body. Now the golf club’s moving a long ways in the swing. A long ways. Even during the takeaway it’s going move about eight or nine feet, but your shoulder blade only needs to move about two and a half inches to complete that same move.
You can try and move the golf club eight or nine feet, or you can learn to move your body two and a half inches. Which one do you think you’re going to be more consistent at? It’s a no brainer right? So as you’re working on your golf swing start focusing on moving your body to get the club to go where you want. Notice I’m not even worried about where the club’s going. I couldn’t care less, but guess where it’s going, right where I want it to. Is that a perfect takeaway?
